Fresh Foods are sometimes not Fresh
Not only do some growers place poisons on crops to keep insects off; but, for some foods, even place the food in ethylene oxide to help keep it fresh and to ripen fruits.
Ethylene oxide is extremely toxic [see http://www.airgas.com/documents/pdf/001081.pdf]. It is used to sterilize surgical instruments for surgery. It is also carcinogenic [cancer causing].
It is best to have a greenhouse in the back yard and grow everything feasible and possible to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Neighborhood bartering is best. If everyone in a neighborhood grew a certain plant, they could barter to other neighbors for foods.
